Forces and motion: Falling and turning Flashcards
What happens when the parachutist jumps out of the aircraft?
She accelerates downwards
How are forces unbalanced when the parachutist first jumps out?
Air resistance has little effect, so that the downward force of her weight is greater than the upward force of air resistance
What happens to air resistance as the parachutist falls?
It increases
What happens once air resistance balances the parachutist’s weight?
Forces are balanced, and she travels at a constant velocity called terminal velocity
Why does air resistance increase when the parachute is opened?
Area increases, and hence air resistance increases
How are forces unbalanced when the parachute is opened?
The upward force of air resistance is greater than the downward force of her wight
What happens when an object is following a circular path?
It is acted upon by a force at right angles to its velocity
