Forces and Motion Flashcards
Vector Quantity?
quantity that has magnitude (size) and direction
- e.g. velocity
Scalar Quantity?
Quantity that has magnitude (size) only
- e.g. speed
Newton’s first law?
If resultant force acting on an object is 0 than:
- if stationary, will remain stationary
- if moving, will remain moving at constant speed in a straight line
Contact forces?
- friction
- air resistance
- tension
- normal contact
Non- contact forces?
- gravitational force
- electrostatic force
- magnetic force
Weight equation?
Weight= mass x gravitational field strength
Acceleration equation?
acceleration= change in velocity / time taken
Resultant force equation?
resultant force= mass x acceleration
Newton’s second law?
acceleration directly proportional to net force and inversely proportional to its mass.
Force= mass x acceleration
Newton’s third law?
every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
F1= F2
Force applied to spring equation?
force applied to spring= spring constant x extension
When may braking distance increase?
- road is wet or icy
- car has poor brakes or bald tyres
- speed of the car is greater
