Forces and Motion Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three ways force can affect a body?
SSD
A
- Changes shape: Can cause a body to stretch or compress
- Changes speed: Can cause a body to speed up or slow down
- Changes direction: Can cause a body to change direction of travel
2
Q
What is the difference between scaler and vector quantities + examples
A
- Scaler only have magnitude (size)
- Vector have magnitude and direction;
-Force
-Acceleration
-Velocity
-Momentum
-Displacement
-Weight
FAVMDW
3
Q
What is friction?
A
Friction is the force between two objects that oppose motion
4
Q
What’re the factors affecting stopping distance
A
- Vehicle speed
- Vehicle mass
- Road conditions
- Reaction time of driver
SMRR
5
Q
How is terminal velocity reached?
A
- As an object falls and speed up, air resistance increases
- Grows large enough to balance downwards weight force
- The weight will equal drag and the object will travel at a constant speed = no further acceleration = terminal velocity
6
Q
What does hookes law state?
A
- The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied
7
Q
What is newtons third law
A
- When two objects interact they exude equal and opposite forces on each other
- Or you can js remember: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
8
Q
What is the ability of elastic behaviour?
A
- It’s the ability of a material to return to its original shape
- After forces causing deformation have been removed
9
Q
What are the safety features for momentum
A
- Air bags
- Seatbelts
- Crumple zones
9
Q
What is momentum?
A
Momentum is a moving object or a mass in motion
10
Q
How do safety features for momentum prevent injury?
A
- Change in momentum stays the same
- But happens over a larger time frame
- This reduces the force felt to the equation force=change in momentum / time
