forces and motion Flashcards
calculate average speed
distance moved/time taken
what is a force
a push or a pull, exerted by one object on another
what is newtons first law of motion
if no external force is acting and object will :
if stationary remain stationary
if moving keep moving at a steady speed
what happens if forces are in balance
the cancel each other out
name the effects force has on an object
- Force can make a stationary object move or make a moving object move faster
- Force can slow down or completely stop a moving object
- Force can change the direction of a moving object
- Force can change the shape or size of an object
what is pressure
force/area
The force per unit area is pressure. The force on the object is spread over the surface area. The area where the force is applied is divided by the equation for pressure.
what is the effect force has on pressure
a force acting over a smaller area will create more pressure.
calculate pressure in a liquid
pressure = dgh
d= density
g=gravity
h=depth
pressure in gases
the more particles that the walls, the higher the pressure.
why does heat affect gas pressure
as a gas is heated up the particles gain more energy and move around more quickly they hit the walls harder and more often
what happens when gas cools
cooler temp, less energy, less pressure
