Forces And Momentum Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
Something that has magnitude (size) but no direction
Give an example of a scalar quantity
Distance, speed, time
What is a vector quantity?
Something that has both magnitude and direction.
Give an example of a vector quantity
Velocity, force, weight
What is displacement
Displacement is distance travelled in a certain direction.
What is a force
A force is a push or pull that acts on an object.
What is Newton’s third law of motion
When two objects interact with each other, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
What is a resultant force
The resultant force on an object is the single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on the object
What is Newton’s first law of motion
It states that if the forces acting on an object are balanced, the resultant force is zero. If the object is at rest, it will stay at rest. If it is moving it will move at the same speed in the same direction
What happens when the resultant force is not zero
The forces acting on an object is not balanced. The movement of the object depends on the size and direction of the resultant force
What are the steps to the parallelogram of forces
Choose a scale
Draw an arrow to represent the first force
From the same starting point draw an arrow to represent the size and direction of the second force
Draw an intersect
Draw a line from the starting point of the forces to the other middle of the intersect
Measure this and the angle
What does a horizontal line mean on a time graph
Stationary
What is velocity
The velocity of an object is its speed in a given direction
What quantity is velocity
Vector
What happens if the resultant force on an object is great
The acceleration is great
