Forces And Braking Flashcards
When a car moves at a steady speed what happens to the forces
The resistive force and driving force are balanced
What are most of the resistive forces caused by
Air resistance
If the speed of a car is great , what does the braking force need to be
The greater the braking force needs to be to stop car at a certain distance
What factors affect stopping distance
- The Thinking distance
- Braking Distance
What is the stopping distance?
This is the sum of the distance the vehicle travels with the thinking and braking distance.(Thinking Distance + Braking Distance = Stopping Distance)
What can the drivers reaction time (Thinking Distance) be affected by?
This can be affected by how fast the vehicle is going and by tiredness, drugs, alcohol, distractions or a careless attitude
What is the thinking distance ?
The distance the vehicle travels during the drivers reaction time
What is the Braking Distance ?
This is the distance the car travels under the breaking force
What can the braking distance be affected by ?
This can be affected by adverse roads, weather conditions and poor condition of car.
What conditions should tyres be ?
They should be the minimum of 1.6mm, for wet conditions.
What could wet conditions on the road cause the car to do ?
They could cause the car to skid
When the brakes of a car are applied, what effect does it have on work done ?
This causes friction force between the brakes and the wheel reduces the kinetic energy of the vehicle and the temp of the brakes increase.
