Forces Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a force?
A push or a pull
What do we measure force in?
newtons (N)
What is the unit of mass?
kilograms (kg)
What is mass?
The amount of matter (stuff) a thing is made up of
What is weight?
The effect gravity is having on an object
What is friction?
The force that resists movement because of contact between surfaces
Upthrust?
A force pushing upwards on an object in a liquid
Lift?
A force pushing upwards on an object flying in the air
Air resistance/drag?
A force acting against any object that is moving through the Earth’s atmosphere
Thrust?
A push caused by an engine
When opposing forces are balanced, they…
either move at a constant speed or stay stationary
How do you work out the weight of something?
mass x gravity
In which situations are friction useful?
On ice when you don’t want to slip, around corners, to effectively keep you standing…
In which situations are friction not useful?
Friction burn, ice skating (in some cases)…
What is speed measured in/how do you calculate speed?
distance/time (For example miles/hour)
What is speed?
How fast or slow something is
how do you calculate density?
mass/volume
What is the effect of unbalanced forces on an object?
The object will travel towards whichever force that is the strongest
What is water resistance?
The force on an object moving through water that cause it to slow down
Streamlined?
Shaped to reduce resistance to motion from air or water
Resistive forces?
Any force that acts to slow down a moving object
What causes friction?
When surfaces make contact that slows down the movement of the object
What reduces friction?
Reducing the contact, Making the surface more smooth, reducing the forces acting on the objects
What is lubrication?
A substance that reduces friction
