Forces Flashcards
what is inertia?
The tendency of an object to continue at in its current state (at rest or uniform motion)
what is newton’s second law?
It states that Force=mass x acceleration
what is newton’s third law?
when two object interact they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
what is a vector quantity?
a quantity with magnitude and direction
e.g. force, velocity
what is newton’s first law?
an objects stays stationary or moves at a constant speed when the resultant force is 0
what is a scalar quantity?
a quantity with only magnitude
e.g. speed, distance
what is a non-contact force?
when the object doesn’t need to be touching for a force to act
what is a contact force?
forces that require contact to act
what is stopping distance?
thinking distance + braking distance
when is work done?
when a force is applied to an object
what are examples of contact forces?
> friction
reaction force
tension
what are examples of contact forces?
> gravitational
electrostatic
magnetic
what are the factors affecting braking distance?
> speed of car
wet or icy road
poor conditions of tyres
what is thinking distance?
distance car travels between when the driver realises they need to brake and when they apply them
what are factors affecting thinking distance?
> drugs and alcohol
tiredness
mobile phone
