Forces Flashcards
Acts perpendicular to the surface
Is equal and opposite to the force of the object pushing on the surface
Normal reaction force
Applies in fluids
Affected by the objects shape speed and the fluid it is travelling in
Air resistance
Occurs when mass is pushed out the back of something
Like letting out the air in a balloon
Thrust
Acts in strings chains and cables when they are stretched
Acts parallel to the string
Tension
Keeps things afloat
Can only occur in fluids
Equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces
Upthrust
Pulls two opposite poles together and pushes two like poles apart.
- the force increases as distance between the poles decreases
Magnetic force
The force required to stretch or compress a spring
- The stretching force is directly proportional to the extension
Elastic/spring force
The force produced due to the flow of a fluid over an aerodynamic surface
For example it keeps things in the air
Lift
Pulls two opposite charges together and pushes two like charges apart.
- the force increases as distance between the charges decreases
Electrostatic force
acts in the opposite direction
- can be reduced if surfaces are smoother
Friction
a push or a pull
Applied force
when masses are attracted to each other
Gravitational force
normal reaction force
Acts perpendicular to the surface
Is equal and opposite to the force of the object pushing on the surface
applied force
a push or a pull
gravitational force
when masses are attracted to each other
