Forces Flashcards
Ture or False - A force is a push, pull or twist
Ture
Ture or False - Forces:
- Change the shape of an object
- Change the direction of an object
- Cause something to start moving
- Cause something to stop moving ‘
- Speed up an already moving object
- Slow down an already moving object
Ture
Ture or False - Newton = n
False - Newton = N
Newtons are named are Sir David Newton
False - Newtons is named after Sir Isaac Newton
Ture or False - We measure Newtons using a spring balance
Ture
Applied force?
A force that is exerted by a person, animal or machine
Gravity?
an attractive force between objects that have mass; on Earth, it pulls objects to the ground, in space, it keeps objects in orbit
Tension?
A force that is being pulled from two directions using a rope/chord
Elastic force?
A force occurs whenever objects spring back to their original shape after being squashed or stretched
Air resistance?
A force that resists an object’s motion through the air
Friction?
A type of contact force that resists an object’s motion across a solid surface to slow it down
Magnetic?
a type of non-contact force that arises from certain materials (E.g. iron) and electric currents
Contact force?
Any force that can only occur when two objects touch, such as friction
Non-contact force?
Any force that can occur even when two objects are not touching, such as gravity, magnetism or electrostatic forces
Balanced force?
Forces that act on an object in opposite directions and are the same size. Balanced forces cancel each other out and have no effect on the object’s motion.
