Forces Flashcards
What is a force
A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object and is measured in newtons
A force can cause an object to:
Change shape (stretch or squash)
Change in motion (accelerate and decelerate)
Change state of rest (start moving)
What are the two types of forces
Contact and non-contact
Is air resistance a contact or non contact force
Air resistance is a contact force because it needs to physically touch the object in order to interact with it
Is friction a contact or a non contact force
Friction is a contact force because it need to have physical contact with the object to interact with it
Is tension a contact or a non contact force
Tension is a contact force because it needs physical contact with the item to interact with it
Is thrust a contact or a non contact force
Thrust is a contact force because it needs to physically touch the object to interact with it
Is magnetic force a contact or a non contact force
Magnetic force is a non contact force because it doesn’t need to Touch the object to interact with it
Is electro static force a contact or a non contact force
Electro static force is a non contact force because it doesn’t need to physically come into contact with the object to interact with it
Is nuclear force a contact or non contact force
Nuclear force is a non contact force because it doesn’t need to physically touch the object to interact with it
Is gravitational force a contact or a non contact force
Gravitational force is a non contact force because it doesn’t need to physically touch the object to interact with it
-note- gravity would not be accepted as an answer. SAY GRAVITATIONAL FORCE/PULL
What happens when two objects interact
They exert opposite forces on each other (newtons third law)
What happens when two interacting forces are unequal
Movement is caused (newtons second law)
What is friction
Friction is the force exerted by a surface against and object as it moves across it

What is resultant force
a force which is the result of two or more forces acting conjointly, or a motion which is the result of two or more motions combined
What is a moment
A moment is the turning effect a force has

M=Fd
Moment = force X distance from pivot
