Forces Flashcards
Forces definition
Α push, pull, or twist that causes α change in motion in an object.
- always have α direction
- can change direction of an object
- can change shape of an object
- measured in Newtons (N)
Magnitude
The measurement for size of force
Contact forces
- frictional force
- tension
- compression
Non-contact forces
(field forces)
- magnetic
- gravitational
- electrostatic
Spring balance types
- compression spring balance: force indicator will get greater with α greater pushing force
- (string?) spring balance: string attached to pointer will indicate amount of force exerted on spring
Gravity
The force that attracts objects to the center of the earth
-mass: measurement of amount of matter in α body (g)
-weight: amount of gravitational force exerted on α body (N)
x(N) = y(kg) x 10
Friction
When α material comes in contact against another
- useful when walking and using brakes - constant fiction causes heat
Magnetism
The force exerted by magnets
- magnets have north and south poles - like poles attract, unlike poles repulse
Pressure
Amount of force per area
- Pressure (N/m²) - smaller area + greater force = greater pressure
Net forces
(Fnet)
The sum of all forces acting on α body in different directions
-forces in the same direction get added together, forces in the opposite direction get subtracted from each other
Electromagnetism
When electricity is transferred into α metal, it can transform into α magnet
-induction: α changing magnetic field induces αn electric current in α wire
