Forces Flashcards
What type of quantity is a force?
A vector
What is Newton’s First Law?
If there is no net force acting upon an object it will remain at rest or travel at a uniform velocity
What is it called when the resultant force on an object is 0N?
The object is in equilibrium
What is a contact force?
A force that is caused by contact between objects
Give an example of a contact force
Friction
Upthrust
Push
Pull
Give an example of a non-contact force
Weight
Electrostatic
Magnetic
Electric
What do all object that have mass experience?
Gravitational force
How can you determine resultant force when forces are perpendicular
Eg. 4N —————> | | 3Ν
Use Pythagoras’ theorem to work out length of hypotenuse or draw it in and measure it
Eg.
H = 5N
What is Newton’s Second Law?
Acceleration is proportional to the resultant force applied
Resultant Force = Mass x Acceleration
What is inertia?
How difficult it is to accelerate an object (the larger the object the more inertia it has)
What is Newton’s Third Law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What always happens when an object has a net force?
It always accelerates
What never happens when an object has no resultant force?
It never accelerates
What happens to acceleration when net force is bigger?
It’s bigger
What happens to acceleration when mass is bigger?
It’s smaller
