Forces Flashcards
Units of force
Newtons
Resultant force
The total amount of force acting on an object
Acceleration and force
Directionally proportional
Gravity
Magnetic force which pulls an object to the ground
Weight
Acts on an object because of gravity
Equation linking force mass and acceleration
Force = mass x acceleration
Equation linking gravity weight and mass
Weight = mass x gravity
Friction
Objects resistance opposing motion
Air resistance/drag
An object moving through the air experiences friction which opposes its movement
Lift
The force that keeps an object in the air
Upthrust
An upward force which acts upon an objection contradicting gravity
Terminal velocity
The drag force has increased to the point where it is exactly balanced the weight and there is no unbalanced force
When is there no resultant force
If an object is stationary or moving at a constant speed
Unbalanced force
Net force- sum of all the forces
Stopping distance
Thinking distance + braking distance
