forces Flashcards
what do scalars have?
magnitude
what do scalars contain?
they have speed and distance but they have no direction
what do vectors have?
magnitude and direction
what do vectors contain?
speed in a given direction
what is displacement?
the distance in a given distance (number + arrow, bearing and a direction)
are forces scalars or vectors?
vectors
what is weight
a force measured in newtons
what is acceleration?
the change in velocity, a change in speed / direction
what is the formula for acceleration?
final velocity - original velocity / time
what is the average walking speed?
1.5m/s
what is the average running speed?
3m/s
what is the average cycling speed?
6m/s
what is the speed of sound?
330m/s
what is the momentum for a stationary object?
none
how do you work out the speed of two things colliding?
find out the momentum of both things, add them together, add both masses up then divide momentum by mass
what is newton’s first law?
an object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force is there, if all forces are balanced the resultant force is zero
what is newton’s second law?
the acceleration of an object increases if the resultant force on it increases and decreases if the mass of the object increases, if there is a resultant force you get acceleration
what is newtons third law?
when two objects interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite
what happens when there is no velocity?
there is no air resistance
what happens when there is increased velocity?
there is increased air resistance
