forces Flashcards
what is a force?
a push or pull exerted on an object
what are the units for force?
N (newtons)
what is newton’s first law?
an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
what is newton’s second law?
force = mass x acceleration (an object will accelerate or change direction if acted upon by an unbalanced force)
what is newton’s third law?
for every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force
what are 3 examples of contact forces?
friction, air resistance, tension
what are 3 examples of non contact forces?
magnetic force, gravitational force, electrostatic force
what is a resultant force?
the vector sum of all forces
what is a scalar quantity?
a quantity with only magnitude
what is acceleration?
a measure of how quickly velocity is changing
what is air resistance?
the frictional force caused by air on a moving object
what are 3 examples of vectors?
force, velocity, displacement
what are 3 examples of scalars?
speed, distance, mass
what is weight?
the force acting on an object due to gravity
what is mass?
the amount of stuff in an object
what is the equation for weight?
weight = mass x gravitational field strength
what is earth’s gravitational field strength?
9.8N/kg
what is the equation for moment?
moment = force x distance
what is moment?
the turning effect of a force
what is the equation for pressure?
pressure = force / area
what is upthrust?
if force is equal to objects weight, it will float. if upthrust is less than weight the object will sink
what is atmospheric pressure?
created on a surface by air molecules, decreases with height
what is displacement?
a vector quantity, measures distance and direction in a straight line from A to B
what is the walking speed?
1.5m/s
