Q

What is the process of a particular thing speeding up or slowing down called?

A

The process is called acceleration or deceleration. Deceleration is a part of acceleration.

Q

How does a spring balance function?

A

A spring balance functions when a weight is attached to the hook on the edge of the balance. The weight creates a pulling force that stretches out a spring inside the spring balance. The more the pulling force is, the more the spring is stretched and the larger the reading is.

Q

What does the direction and length of the arrow represent?

A

The direction of the arrow represents the direction of the force and the length of the arrow depicts the size of the force. The longer the length of the arrow is ,the stronger the force is.

Q

What is a balanced force?

A

A balanced force is when all forces acting on an object are balanced and are the same. When a balanced force is placed is on an object, the object does not change motion. This means that the object will either stay at rest or move at a constant speed without changing direction.

Q

What is an unbalanced force?

A

An unbalanced force is when all forces acting on an object are unbalanced meaning, one force is applied in greater amounts than the other. When an unbalanced force is placed on an object, the object will change its motion(speed/ direction would change)

Q

What is inertia?

A

Inertia is the tendency of any physical object to resist change in motion. This means any objects in motion tends to stay in motion and any object at rest tends to stay at rest. Any object will continue moving in the same direction unless an unbalanced force acts upon it.

Q

What will unbalanced forces do to an object?

A

An unbalanced force can make an object start to move, speed up, slow down, come to a stope, change direction or change the shape/size.

Q

What is the relationship between inertia and mass?

A

The greater the mass of an object is the greater inertia it has. Therefore, the more mass an object has, it has a greater tendency to resist changes in its state of motion.

What are some examples of contact forces?

A

Friction and buoyancy

17
Q

What reduces the impact of forces ?

A

Helmets, mouthguard, knee pads, running footwear(to cushion the toe and heel). Cars contain crumple zones(to absorb all impact on collision), seatbelts(to hold in place), airbags(to avoid getting hit in collision), antilock brakes(to allow the driver to steer while braking heavily), traction control(stop wheel from spinning), electronic stability control(detects when driver has lost control and assist to regain control), brake assist(helps with brakes).
