Forces Flashcards
What is a scalar?
A physical quality that has magnitude but no direction
Examples of scalars?
Speed/volume/temperature/hight
What is a vector?
A physical quantity that has both magnitude and direction
Examples of vectors?
Acceleration/force/displacement
What is acceleration?
The rate in change of speed or direction of an object
What is a force?
A force is a push or a pull that changes the shape/speed/direction of an object. Its unit is newtons.
What is Newton’s first law?
If the resultant force on a body is zero, the body will move at a constant speed.
What is Newton’s second law?
If the resultant force on a body is not equal to zero the body will accelerate according to the formula f=ma
What is weight measured in?
Newtons
What is mass measured in?
Kgs
What is the gravitational field strength on earth
10
What is stopping distance
Thinking distance + breaking distance
What is thinking distance
Time taken to press the brake after seeing a problem
What is breaking distance?
Time taken for car to stop after pressing the brakes
Factors affecting thinking distance?
-alcohol
-drugs
-age
-eyesight/ poor visibility
-fatigue
