Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull (or twist)
What is force measured in and what symbol do we use to represent force?
Measured in Newtons (N)
Symbol = F
What can forces change?
Forces can cause an object to change speed (decelerate or accelerate), direction or shape
What happens if a pair of forces are balanced?
The object will either: stay at rest (stationary) or continue moving in a straight line at a constant speed
How do you calculate resultant forces?
Minus the smaller number off the bigger number. eg. <===50 - 5=> =45
45N = resultant force <===
What is magnetism?
Magnetism is a field force - a non-contact force = acts over a distance. Magnets have 2 poles - a north and a south pole
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter that an object is made up of
What is mass measured in?
kilograms (kg) using an ordinary balance/scale
Is the mass of an object constant everywhere in the universe?
Yes
What is weight?
Weight is the force of gravity on a mass due to the pull of the Earth
What is weight measured in?
Newtons (N) using a spring balance
Does the weight of an object varie place to place depending on the force of gravity?
Yes
What is the equation to finding mass, weight and gravity?
W = m x g
m = W ÷ g
g = W ÷ m
Do opposite charges repel each other?
No they attract each other
