Forces Flashcards
If a force is going up in a vertical plane, is it positive or negative?
Positive, example being upthrust
Example of a negative downward force?
Weight
If a force is going left in horizontal plane, is it positive or negative?
Negative, example being drag
Example of a positive force moving right
Thrust
Equation for resultant force including mass
Resultant force = Mass X Acceleration
FR = m x a
Equation for resultant force including 2 forces
Resultant force = Force 1 + Force 2
FR = Thrust + Drag
FR = T + D
If T = 100 N
If D = -50 N
FR = 100 + (-50)
FR = 50 N
If you are asked for resultant force but you only have 1 force and its the Upthrust and you have the mass what do you do?
You calculate the weight assuming gravity is 10 unless specified by the question and then you use the Weight and the Upthrust to calculate the Resultant Force.
What is Newtons 1st Law?
When the force on a system are balanced and so FR = 0, the object will not accelerate.
The 2 possible states of motion from newtons 1st law
Stationary
Moving at a constant velocity.
When does a body comply with newtons 2nd law
The forces are unbalanced
There is a resultant force
The object will be forced to accelerate
2 things an object can do to accelerate
Change speed
Change direction
