Forces Flashcards
Static Electricity
a stationary electric charge that is built up on material. Charges of electricity that do not flow.
Unbalanced force
Exists when forces acting on an object result in motion or a change in motion
Volume
Volume is the amount of space taken up by a substance or an object, regardless of its shape or state
Weight
the force of gravity acting on an object.
Attract
to pull toward one another.
balanced force
exists when all the forces acting on an object result in the object staying at rest or moving at a constant speed in the same direction
claim
a clear, concise statement that answers the question in an investigation. Should be supported by evidence directly from the investigation.
collision
when objects come together with direct contact
contact force
a push or a pull that touches or comes in contact with an object to change motion
evidence
the data or research that supports the claim. This comes directly from the data collected in the investigation and should cite actual number or observations from a data table, chart, or graph
gravity
a force where one object pulls on another object. This force is found between any two objects
Kinetic energy
the energy related to an object in motion
magnetic attraction
the pull of magnetic objects toward a magnet
magnetic repulsion
the push of magnetic objects away from a magnet
mass
the measure of the amount of matter in an object. This remains the same no matter what the gravitational pull.
Motion
The changing of position of an object. Can be described in chanceds of distance, time, and/or direction
non-contact force
a push or a pull that moves an object without touching or coming in contact with the object. These change motion over a distance, such as magnetic and electrical fields and gravity
potential energy
energy related to an object due to its shape or position
reasoning
ties scientific understandings to the claim and evidence. Explains why the claim and evidence make sense
Speed
the measurement of how fast an object travels from one point to another.
