What is statics?
The study of a system on a state of equilibrium. Uniform motion. No acceleration.
What is dynamics?
The study of the cause of motion and changes in motion. Acceleration is not zero.
What is contact?
Physical touch.
What is a field?
It works at a distance. No physical contact required.

Strong, weak, electromagnetic, gravity.

Fg, changes based on gravity and mass
What is force?
A push or pull.

Unchanging. No matter what gravity is.

Weight is the force of gravity on the object.

What direction is the Normal Force in?
It is perpendicular to the surface.
What direction is the Force of Friction?
Acts parallel to the surface in the opposite direction of motion.
What is net force?
The vector sum of two or more forces acting simultaneously on an object.
Things to keep in mind with free body diagrams?
Keep them simple. Use squares or shapes for the object.
Use vector arrows to represent forces. Each force needs its own arrow.
Use vector addition to find the net force.
If there is an unbalanced external force acting on an object…
The object will accelerate.
If the net force on an object is 0N…
The object will not accelerate, and will retain its velocity.
What are the 2 types of friction covered in this unit?
Static, and kinetic.
What is static friction?
Occurs between two objects that are not moving relative to each other. This friction opposes the start of motion.
What is kinetic friction?
Occurs when two objects are in motion with each other and rub together. This friction opposes motion.
