Forces Flashcards
What is a force
A push or a pull exerted upon an object
What effects can a force have on an object
Can start an object to move Stop a moving object Change the direction of a moving object Rotate an object Change the speed of a moving object Change the shape of an object: Temporary - Elastic Permanent - Plastic
What can you use to measure force
Newton Meter
What are the two ways that force can be categorised
Contact or Non-Contact
What is a contact force
Results when two bodies are in contact with each other
What is a non-contact force
Results from action at a distance between two bodies
What are 3 contact forces
Friction
Tension
Compression
What are 3 non-contact forces
Gravitational Force
Magnetic Force
Electrostatic Force
What is a second way of categorising forces
Forces acting on the same object vs Forces acting on two different objects
What is a resultant force
A single force which has the same effect as two or more forces acting on an object
What is mass
The amount of matter inside an object
Measured in kilograms
What is weight
This is the force of gravity acting on an object to pull it down
Weight is measured in Newtons
What is the gravitational acceleration on Earth
9.81
What are the two factors that affect the strength of the gravitational force
Mass of the object
Distance between the objects`
WHAT ARE THE FERROMAGNETIC MATERIALS
Iron
Steel
Cobalt
Nickel
Look in book for magnetic field lines
.
What is static electricity
Build up of electrical charges on the surface of objects. Discharges when it is given a path. Once off movement of charge
What is current electricity
Continuous flow of charge through a conductor
Which way do electrons flow in the triboelectric series
Protons flow from the more positive object to the negative object
What are the two ways in which an electroscope can be used
Detect whether or not an object is charged
Determine whether an object is positively or negatively charged
How do you tell whether or not an object is charged via the electroscope
Place the object near the electroscope and if the leaf deflects either outwards or inwards the object is charged
How do you determine whether an object is positively or negatively charged
You have to know the charge of the electroscope and then you can work out the charge of the object from there. If the electroscope is negatively charged and the leaf falls back down to the rod then the object is positive.
What is lightning
A discharge of charge that has built up in a thundercloud
