Forces Flashcards
Force
Forces are always nearly pushed or pulls- they cannot be seen but the effects of the force can be seen
Newton (N)
Unit of force
Newton meter
Price of apparatus used to measure force
Force can …
Change an objects speed, direction of motion and shape
Balanced forces
Balanced forces are equal in size and opposite in direction so produce no change in direction
Unbalanced forces
When two forces acting on a object are not equal in size resulting in a change of speed or direction
Resultant force
This is the overall force acting on an object
Contact force
Forces that act between two objects that are physically touching each other Examples of contact forces including pulling, pushing, friction, up thrust, air resistance, reaction force and tension
Non contact force
Forces that act between two objects that are not physically touching each other examples of non contact forces include magnetic field, electrostatic force and weight
Force diagram
Used to show the size and direction of a force. The length of the arrow is used to show the size of the force
Hooke’s law
When an elastic object such as a spring, is stretched, the increased length is called it’s extension. Of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied to it as long as it is within it’s elastic limit
