Force Types Flashcards
What is Gravitational Force?
The force created by matter. The larger the object, the greater the gravitational force.
e.g. the gravitational forces of Earth.
What is Frictional Force?
The opposing force created between two surfaces.
e.g. brakes squeezing against a wheel to slow it down.
What is Magnetic Force?
The attraction or repulsion between magnets.
What is Spring Force?
The push force created by a compressed spring.
What is Elastic Force?
The pull force created by a stretched elastic band.
What is Buoyancy?
The force that pushes less dense objects up.
e.g. the buoyancy of a boat.
What is Thrust?
The mechanical force that propels an object.
e.g. the thrust created by a car engine.
What is Air Resistance or Drag?
The force acting opposite to the relative motion of any object moving through a fluid.
e.g. the resistance a plane experiences flying through the air.
What is Lift?
A force exerted by a fluid flowing around an object, perpendicular to the oncoming flow direction.
e.g. the air that is forced down under an airplane’s wings.
What is Reaction/Normal Force?
The force created by a surface that stops the falling of an object.
e.g. the force a table applies to a book that sits on it.
What is Applied Force?
A force applied to an object by a person or another object.
e.g. if a person is pushing a desk across the room, then there is an applied force acting upon the object.
What is Electrostatic Force?
The attraction or repulsion created by charged objects.
e.g. a static balloon attracts to a wool jumper.
What is Tension Force?
The pulling force through a flexible medium such as a string exerted by a mass or person.
e.g. the tension on a rope in a tug of war.
