Force And Work Flashcards
What is force
Something that causes an object to accelerate (negative or positive)
What is the unit and how is it measured
Newton (N) and measured with Newton meter
What is the effect of pushing
Moves or increases speed or changes direction ex. Child on swing
What is the effect of pulling
Moves or increases speed or changes direction ex. Pulling of a boot
What is the effect of weight
Moves object towards the centre of the earth ex.a ball falling
What is the effect of friction
Slows object moving over each other ex.brakes on a bicycle
What is the effect of tension
Moves object on pulleys or stops a body from falling ex.light suspended from the ceiling
What is the effect of reaction
Supports or balances weight ex.book resting on a table
What is the effect of stretching
Changes shape of object ex.stretching an elastic band
What is the effect of twisting
Causes rotation ex.opening a cap of a bottle
What is the effect of compression
Changes shape of object ex.sitting on a cushion
What is the effect of magnetic
Moves magnetic materials ex.picking up iron in swap yard
What is the effect of electric
Moves charged particles ex.positive charges attracting negative
What is weight and how is it measured
Force of gravity on an object (mass x 10) 0.4kg x 10=4N
What is friction
Force which opposes motion between two objects in contact
Name the disadvantages
- slows things down
- waste of energy
- wears away surfaces in contact with each other
Name the advantages
- stop or slow things down
- allow things to move (walking)
- pick things up (fingers)
What is a lubrication
Oil used in engines to reduce friction ex.synorical fluids acts as friction in joints
What is Hooke’s law
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force that is stretching it
What is work and the unit
When a force moves an object, force x distance moved, joules (j)
What is energy
Ability to do work (joules)
What is power and how to calculate it
Work done per unit time, work done : time taken, watt(W)
