Force and speed Flashcards
Push/pull
A force exerted to move an object away or towards another object
Friction
The force between two surfaces sliding over one another, that causes them to heat up and wear
Weight
The force that pulls objects towards the centre of the Earth
Air resistance/drag
A force acting against any object that is moving through the Earth’s atmosphere
Lift
A force pushing upwards on an object flying through the air
Upthrust
A force pushing on an object in a liquid
Thrust
A push caused by an engine
Balanced
Forces acting on an object that are the same size but act in opposite directions
Compress
To squash into a smaller space
Contact force
A force that acts when an object is in contact with surface, air or water
Deform
To change shape
Drag force
The force acting on an object moving through the air or through water that causes it to slow down
Driving force
The force that is pushing or pulling on an object
Elastic limit
The point beyond which a spring will not return to it’s original length when the force is removed
Electrostatic force
The force acting between two charged objects
Equilibrium
Balanced
Extension
The amount by which an object gets longer when a force is applied
Field
A region where something feels a force
Gravity
A non-contact force that acts between two masses
Hooke’s law
The law saying that if you double the force on an object the extension will double
Interaction pair
When two objects interact there is a force on each one that is the same size but in opposing directions
Kilogram (kg)
A unit of mass, symbol kg
Lubrication
A substance that reduces friction between surfaces when they rub together
Magnetic force
The force between two magnets, or a magnet and a magnetic material
Mass
The amount of matter (stuff) a thing is made up of
Newton (N)
The unit of force, symbol N
Newton metre
A piece of equipment used to measure weight in newtons
Non-contact force
A magnetic, electrostatic or gravitational force that acts between objects not in contact
Reaction
The support force provided by a solid surface like a floor
Resistive forces
Any forces that act to slow down a moving object
Streamlined
Shaped to reduce resistance to motion from air or water
Tension
A stretching force
Unbalanced
Opposing forces on an object that are unequal
What does 100g of mass weigh? (N)
1N
Earth’s Gravitational field strength is?
10N/kg
Equation for mass?
m=w/g
Equation for gravity?
g=w/m
Equation for weight?
w=mg
Equation for speed?
s=d/t
Equation for distance?
d=st
Equation for time?
t=d/s
How do you write miles per hour?
m/h
In a distance-time graph, what does a diagonal line mean?
A constant speed
In a distance-time graph, what does a horizontal line mean?
Stationary
In a distance-time graph, what does a downwards diagonal line mean?
Constant speed in the opposite direction
In a distance-time graph, what does a steeper diagonal line mean?
Faster constant speed
What will a newton metre read when dangled in water?
It will not have to pull up as much because of upthrust, therefore reading lower than if it were in the air.
The denser the liquid the more…?
The denser the liquid the more upthrust you get
Equation for density?
Density=Mass/Volume
What is the unit for density?
g/cm^3
Following Hooke’s law, what will the line of a graph be?
It will be a straight line from its origin
