Force And Motion Flashcards
The speed of an object in a given direction
Ex. The cheetah is moving 60mph west.
Velocity
An object’s tendency to stay at rest or stay in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force
Inertia
The amount of matter in an object
Mass
A push or pull; all forces have both size and direction
Force
When forces applied to an object produce a net force of zero; balanced forces do not cause a change in motion.
Example: A dog pulls on a rope with a force of 30N. His owner pulls back with a force of 30N. The rope does not move in either direction
30N-30N=0N
Balanced force
A force that opposes motion when 2 surfaces are touching; can be sliding, rolling, or gliding
Friction
The rate at which an object moves
Ex. The cheetah runs 60mph.
Speed
When an object changes position in relation to a reference point over a period of time.
Motion
Happens when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force
Work
The measure of gravitational forces exerted on an object
Weight
The SI (metric) unit used by scientists to express force
Newton
When the net force of an object is NOT zero. It takes an unbalanced force to produce a chance in motion.
Ex. A man slides a box across the table with a force of 50 N to the right. The force of friction between the box and the table in the opposite direction is 20 N. The box moves to the right with a force of 30N.
Unbalanced force
The characteristic of a moving body that is caused by its mass and its motion
Momentum
The amount of matter in an object; it’s value does not change because of gravity
Mass
The force that results from the combining of all forces acting on an object
Net force
