Force And Laws Of Motion Flashcards
What is Force?
Force is a vector quantity that is a push or pull acting on a given object.
Newton’s first law of motion
An object remains in a state of rest/ uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change state and or direction by an applied force
Define inertia
It is the natural tendency of an object to resist change in its state of motion/ rest
Formula of momentum
p = mv
Newton’s second law of motion
The rate of change in momentum of an unbalanced force is proportional to the applied unbalanced force in the direction of the force
Define Momentum
A vector quantity of the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity
Formula for change in momentum
∝p1 - p2
∝mv -mu
∝m(v-u)
Formula for rate of change of momentum
∝p1 - p2/ t
∝m(v-u)/ t
Formula for applied force
F= ma
SI unit of momentum
kg m/s
CGS unit of momentum
g cm/s
Define a Newton
The force required in an object of mass of 1 kg to produce an acceleration of 1 m/s²
Newton’s third law of motion
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
