Force Flashcards
Contact Forces
a push or pull that matter experiences when coming into contact with another object
equilibrium
the vector sum of all forces acting upon the particle is zero. the condition of a system when neither its state of motion nor its internal energy state tends to change with time
external forces
force caused by an agent outside a system
force
a force is any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. A force can cause an object with mass to change its velocity
force pair
action-reaction forces according to Newton’s third law
frame of reference
a framework used to observe a physical phenomena; there is typically an observer, coordinate system, and a clock assigning times at positions
free body diagram, FBD
a graphical illustration used to visualize the forces, moments, and reactions on a body
gravitational force
natural phenomena which draws masses and energies toward one another. On Earth, it gives weight to physical objects
inertial frame of reference
a frame of reference in which a body is at rest or moving at a constant velocity
mass
measured in kilograms. it is the matter that makes u an object and is used to find both accelerations and forces applied to objects
inertial forces
a force which keeps objects at rest or in a constant velocity. Invoked by an observer to maintain the validity of Newton’s third laws
kilogram
SI unit of mass
kinetic friction
force opposite of the motion on a surface; μk times the normal force
net external force
the vector sum of all the forces acting on a system. there is only one net external force and thats the motion we see
net force
The net force is the vector sum of all the forces that act upon an object. A single force replaces the effect of the original forces
