Force Flashcards
Net force
Overall force acting on an object
Force
Strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement
Friction
Two opposing forces grinding against eachother
Gravity
The force that pulls objects towards a planetary sized object
Field
A region in which each point is effected by a force
Weight
The force exerted on a body by gravity
Newton’s first law
Every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by an action or external force
Inertia
A property of matter by which it continue in it’s existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force
Newton’s second law
The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
Newton’s third law
For every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction
Air resistance
Force that is caused by air. The force acts in the opposite direction of the objects moving through the air
Terminal velocity
The constant speed that a free falling object eventually reaches when the resistance of the medium through which it is falling prevents further acceleration
Free fall
Any motion of a body where it’s weight is the only force acting upon it.
Centripetal force
A force that acts on a body moving in a circular path and is directed toward the center around which the body is moving
Law of conservation of momentum
For a collision occurring between object 1 and object 2 in an isolated system, the total momentum of the two objects before the collision is equal to the total momentum of the two objects after the collision
