Force Flashcards
Net force
Sum of all of the forces that are acting on a object
Force
A push or pull exerted on an object
Friction
Force that opposes that sliding motion between 2 touching surface
Gravity
Attractive force between 2 objects that depends on the masses of the object and the distance
Field
Region of space where every point has a physical quantity
Weight
Gravitational force exerted on an object
Newton’s first law of motion
Object moving at a constant velocity keeps moving unless an unbalanced force acts on it
Inertia
Tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion
Newton’s second law of motion
Acceleration equals the net force divided by its mass
Newton’s third law of motion
When one object exerts a force on a second object the second object exerts a force on the first object
Air resistance
Force that opposes the motion of object that move through the air
Terminal velocity
The maximum speed an object will reach when falling though a substance such as air
Free fall
Describes the fall of an object
Centripetal force
Force that’s directed toward the center of a curved
Law of conservation of momentum
If no external force act on a group of objects, their total momentum does not change
