Force Flashcards
Any object at rest or in uniform motion
will remain that way unless acted upon by a force
A force is
that which changes the state of motion of an object
Newton’s laws of motion
1) Every object at rest or in uniform motion remains that way unless acted upon by a force
2) force is equal to mass by acceleration [F=ma]
3) for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction
Unit for force
Newton (N)
If a force of 100N acts on a mass of 20kg what is the acceleration?
100N/20kg = 5 m/sec²
if a person has a mass of 75kg what is their approximate weight
75kg x 9.8m/s = 735N
Gravity
There is a force of attraction between any two objects which have mass
Newton’s law of gravitation (inverse square law)
force is proportional to 1/the distance squared
F = G(m1m2/d^2)
F = gravitational force
G = gravitational constant
m1 = mass of object 1
m2 = mass of object 2
d = distance between masses
Newton’s second law
F = mg
F = force
m = mass
g = acceleration due to gravity
The accepted value for g (acceleration due to gravity)
9.81m/s
