For Interview 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Tell me about a time when things didn’t go as planned.

A

In my current position, I hold a 1-day convention that includes professional development and a career fair. It was my first time leading this event so I delegated - I asked a volunteer that seemed really organized. I gave her time to plan, then we met and went over the plan. We missed a step. We mapped the layout, but skipped the part about how to get each fold to each table in an organized way. We did the best we could in the moment, but I developed a plan for the future that made that step really easy. We just had my second career fair and that planning paid off

Q

What has been your experience in recruiting and training volunteers?

A

I used to work for a literacy nonprofit called Reading Partners. I was responsible for training volunteers, pairing them with a student, making sure they followed the curriculum. My role was definitely focused on training and leading more than recruiting, but I also participated in 1 recruiting event each month. I would present at local churches or at book clubs or festivals.

Q

Tell me about yourself

A

I believe in the power of community. I believe that we are at our best when we are engaged in our community. For these reasons, I’ve devoted much of my life to an organization called AmeriCorps. Within my specific AmeriCorps program, I strengthen communities and build leaders - this has always resonated with me. Through this organization, I’ve worked with the Red Cross in a few different ways and believe in the impact they have in communities

Q

What process and planning would you use to prepare to train 8 volunteers?

A

Id want to know the overall goal I’d want to know if there was an established curriculum. With an established curriculum, I would figure some natural spaces for a break, I would see if I could make anything into smaller activities for pairs or groups of 4. Then I’d practice! If there was no established curriculum, I’d do the same thing, but with the additional steps of research and quality checking with a peer or supervisor
