Football Flashcards
Passing
Outcome focused Form focused Accuracy Weight Time Disguise Appropriate
Passing Pedagogical Considerations
Smaller sized soccer balls (or various sized balls)
Manipulate number of touches on the ball
Focus on keeping the ball on the ground (for beginners)
Area of play/ activity: Appropriate for the relevant skill level, physical
characteristics and group sizes of learners
Receiving
Feet like a cushion
Ball out to the side
Additional cues
Contact point (inside, outside, sole): flat surfaces of the foot
Get behind the ball
The first touch should always allow you to do something with the ball. i.e.
pass, shoot, cross, shield etc
Receive pass at an angle with the first touch
Consider your options even before collecting the pass
Support Play
Provide an angle to receive pass from team mate
Focus on creating a channel for a pass
Increase the challenge in passing, receiving and supporting relative to previous lesson
Manipulation of rules, equipment and area could be key considerations
Ball Control
Before receiving- be aware of the situation in the immediate area (i.e., look around and check if there are opponents near you)
Cushion the ball into your body
On impact- withdraw the controlling surface to reduce pace of pass (i.e., cushion the ball)
Use different parts of the body depending on the incoming pass
Get ‘behind the line’ of pass
First touch should allow you to do something with the ball
Shielding
See yourself as a ‘thick wall’ between the ball and the opponent
Side on stance
Keep the ball as far away from opponent as possible
Keep ball under control
Keep body low
Shielding of the ball takes place when there is a lack of support from team mates
Moving with ball
Keep ball close to you
String between ball and feet
Able to stop ball within 2 secs
Use larger and flat surfaces of shoe to push ball
Turning to Create Space
Keep your body low when executing the turns
One chopping/ continuous action when executing the turns
Change in direction
Change in speed
Disguise the move (make the play as unpredictable as possible for your opponent)
Execute the turns (Inside/ Outside) to create space for a pass, shot or cross
Inside turn; Outside turn; Drag back; Cruyff turn
Forward Runs
Changing the direction of play (creating space as a team) Overlapping runs (Forward runs- creating space for the team) Diagonal runs (Forward runs- to pull the defender away to allow team mate with ball to move into space vacated by the defender) Diagonal runs (Forward runs- run into space to provide an option for team mate with ball to execute a pass)
Switch Plays (Team)
Changing the direction of play (creating space as a team)
Use the flanks
Appropriate to use long range passes
Heading
Contact ball with forehead (i.e., striking ball with hardest, flattest part of head)
Keep your eyes on the ball
Defensive header (contact the lower portion of the ball)- for height
Offensive header (contact the upper portion of the ball)- for downward flight of the ball
Arch body for preparatory phase prior to contact
Head through the ball in direction of target
GK Basic Stance
Feet shoulder width apart
Weight forward on balls of feet
Hands carried slightly away from body (at around hip height)
Head steady and looking at ball
GK Movement of Feet
Side to side action rather than crossing legs when moving
GK Handling and Positioning
Gripping- Open up your palms and fingers to hold on to the ball
Get body behind the ball (as a barrier)
Cup the ball between your forearm and chest
Positioning- Narrow the angle for your opponent to shoot at the goal
Put yourself between the ball and the middle of the goal (shooting line)
Staying on and off the line- depending on how far the opponent is from the goal
Aim is to narrow the angle for your opponent to shoot but not to stray too far off
such that the ball can be played over you into the goal
GK Diving for the Ball
Quick movement of feet Push off the leg nearest to ball Body horizontal and open to the ball when diving Nearest hand reaching behind the ball Furthest hand reaching for top of ball Pull knees up to chest to protect ball
Shooting (Technique)
Planting foot beside the ball
Point your toes towards the ground to lock your ankles
Contact ball with the shoe laces of your boot
Follow through
Aim at shot at a target
Keep the shot low
Keep the trajectory of the shot flat
Dribbling and beating a player (Rationale)
Dribble to beat an opponent to create space for a pass or shot
Dribble past an opponent to create a numerical advantage
Dribbling and beating a player (Technique)
Change of direction
Change of pace/ speed
Good close control of the ball
Tricking and unbalancing an opponent
Three Things Vital to Good Dribbling
Right attitude and understanding
Good technique
The right application
Tackling (Individual)
Block Tackle Keep body low/ lower the CG Lock ankle Contact with inside of foot Provide a barrier (block) against opponent (like a wall) Eyes on the ball and body Poke Tackle Keep body low/ lower the CG Extend tackling leg (like a fencer) Poke ball with toes
Marking (Individual)
Provide a side on stance
Show the opponent the direction where you want him/ her to go (channeling)
Focus on the ball and body
Feinting to tackle
Establish an appropriate distance between opponent and yourself (not too near to be easily turned by opponent, not to far for you to make a tackle when the opportunity arises)
Defending
Communication between the 1st and 2nd defenders are vital
Second defender to communicate and direct the first defender because the second
defender has a better view of the situation
Using analogies as well: See your pair as a funnel and channeling the attacker to one direction
The second defender acts as a ‘stopper’ in the process
Defending (Getting goal side)
Get between ball and goal once possession is lost
Create a barrier for the opponent and impede progress towards your own goal
Defending (Delaying)
To delay opponents from attacking and advancing into defending area
To provide some time for team mate to get back into defensive position
Delay by narrowing the angle for a pass by the opponent and also the playing space
