Foot Care Flashcards
What are calluses?
Localized area of thickened skin:
Helps us protect from constant during walking
Found on eight-bearing/friction points
Should callouses be treated?
Depends, some callousing is necessary, but excess callousing can lead to cracked heels
Change footwear or use pumice stone
What is a good treatment option for cracked or bleeding heels?
Liquid bandages are a good choice
How do callous removers work?
A bandage holds a pliable disk soaked in salicylic acid in place over a callous
What are corns in relation to foot care?
Corns form via the same mechanism (hyperkeratotic state), but they are located on the joints (found on the toe joints)
What is the difference between soft and hard corns?
Hard corns develop on the top of the toes and soft corns occur between toes or on the side of toes
How are corns removed?
Similar to callous removal
Apply bandage (protects corn from repeat impact) and can also add salicylic acid to the mix as a keratolytic
Soak hard corns first and do not apply salicylic acid on healthy skin
What are bunions?
Swelling of joint via deviation of big toe
They can be caused by a structural defect, heredity, and exacerbated by shoes
