Inflammation at insertion of plantar fascia tendon into calcaneum
What are the symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?
Localised pain when walking or standing
Midline tenderness
How is plantar fasciitis managed?
Heel pads
Reduced walking
Splinting of foot in dorsiflexed position to stretch plantar fascia
Spontaneous recovery in 1 yr
What is subcalcaneal bursitis?`
Pressure induced bursa under the heel often due to tight shoes
What are the symptoms of subcalcaneal bursitis?
Similar to plantar fascitis
Pain on compression of heel pad from side
What is the management of subcalcaneal bursitis?
Heel pads and reduced walking
What is Achilles tendonitis?
Inflammation at insertion of achilles into calcaneus
Can be due to trauma or seronegative spondyloarthropathies
What are the symptoms of achilles tendonitis?
Pain behind heel and leg
Morning pain and stiffness common
What is the management of achilles tendonitis?
Raised shoe heel to reduce pain
Low pressure steroid injections
What are features of achilles tendon rupture?
Pop sound during exercise
Severe pain and inability to walk after
What is found on examination in achilles tendon rupture?
Positive Simmonds test
What Ix is needed for achilles tendon rupture?
USS
