Food Webs Flashcards
What is a Food Web?
A diagram showing how organisms in an ecosystem are connected through feeding relationships.
Define Producers
Organisms like plants and phytoplankton that create food through photosynthesis.
Primary Consumers (Herbivore)
Animals that eat producers, like rabbits and deer.
Secondary Consumers (Carnivores)
Animals that eat primary consumers, like foxes and birds.
Tertiary Consumers
Top predators that eat secondary consumers, like eagles.
Role of Decomposers
Organisms like bacteria and fungi that break down dead matter, recycling nutrients into the ecosystem.
Predation
One organism (predator) hunts and eats another (prey), e.g., a hawk eating a mouse.
Competition
Organisms competing for resources, like two bird species for seeds.
Mutualism
Both species benefit, e.g., bees pollinate flowers while getting nectar.
Parasitism
One organism benefits at the expense of another, like a tick on a mammal.
Commensalim
One organism benefits while the other is unaffected, like barnacles on a whale.
