Food Web and Food Chains Flashcards
What happened to energy as it flows through a food web?
It keeps going until the consumer dies and decomposed take it down or when the food chain is removed or added to it . It stays the same as long as nothing eats it .
Why are food chains especially useful for describing the relationships of specialist?
Because they only eat a limited variety of organisms , thus it shows those organisms .
What is a food chain ?
Model that shows how energy passes from one organism to another .
What is a food web?
A series of overlapping or connected food chains that exist in an ecosystem.
What is the 10%?
Only about 10% of the energy consumed by a first level consumer is available for the second level consumer .
Primary Consumers
Are usually herbivores feeding on plants and fungus. Ex: Rabbits, Grasshoppers.
Secondary Consumers
Omnivores who feed on both plants and animals . Ex: Rat, Fish
What is the main source of all energy for life on earth?
The sun
How does energy flow through ecosystems?
Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction.
What is a tropic level ?
Each feeding step in a energy pyramid, food chain or food web represents a tropic level, which is the passage of energy and materials .
