Food Web Flashcards
or producer, is an organism that produces complex organic compounds from simple substances present in its surroundings, generally using energy from light or inorganic chemical reactions.
Autotroph
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.
Photosynthesis
the synthesis of organic compounds by bacteria or other living organisms using energy derived from reactions involving inorganic chemicals, typically in the absence of sunlight.
Chemosynthesis
an organism that cannot fix carbon from inorganic sources but uses organic carbon for growth.
Heterotroph
the food or other substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition.
Nourishment
a person or thing that makes or causes something.
Producer
a person or thing that eats or uses something
Consumer
a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species
Food chain
an animal that feeds on plants.
Herbivore
An animal that feeds on meat
Carnivore
An animal that eats both meat and plants
Omnivore
an animal that feeds on dead organic material, especially plant detritus.
Detritivore
an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material
Decomposer
each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain and the same nutritional relationship to the primary sources of energy.
Trophic level
the living organism that eats the producers
