What is a food test?
A test to find out which nutrients are in food products
How do you make a food solution?
Crush food using a pestle and mortar, then add afew drops of water and mix
What solution do you use to test for starch?
Iodine solution
What colour is idoine solution?
Orange/yellow liquid
How do you know if starch is present?
The solution turns a blue black colour if the food contains starch
How do you test for lipids in a solid food?
Rub food on filter paper, if it is greasy/translucent the food contains lipids
What do you use to test for lipids in a food solution?
Ethanol
What colour is ethanol?
Colourless
How do you test for lipids?
Add afew drops of ethanol to food solution, pour ethanol into water. If it turns cloudy the food contains lipids.
What do you use to test for sugar?
Benedict solution
What colour is benedict solution?
Blue
How do you test for sugar?
Add afew drops of benedict to food solution, heat the test tube in a water bath
What happens if sugar is present?
It turns orange/red
What do you use to test for protein?
Copper sulfate solution and sodium hydroxide solution
What colour is copper sulphate solution?
Pale blue
