Food Test And Digestion Flashcards
What is the test for starch
Add iodine
if starch present goes from yellow-brown to blue-black
What is the food test for sugar
Add Benedicts AND heat.
If sugar present goes from blue to green to brick red
What is the test for protein
Add Biuret
If protein present goes from blue to Purple
What is the test for fat
Add ethanol and water
Mix
If cloudy emulsion fat present
If food is burnt and energy release it can be used to heat water.
The equation to calculate energy in 1 g of food is:
Rise in temperature x volume of water x 4.2
If l burnt 5g of crisps and the temperature of 100cm3 of water went from 20 to 90 degrees C. How much energy in 1 g?
5g of crisps
Temperature rise = 70
Rise in temp x volume x 4.2 =
70 x 100 x 4.2 = 29400J in 5 g
In 1g of crisp then 29400/5 = 5880J
What is the unit for energy
Joule (J)
What is the hard outside part of the tooth called
Enamel
What is the name of the part of tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves
Pulp cavity
What is the living part of tooth found just below enamel
Dentine
What is the part of the tooth found above gums
Crown
What forms plaque
Plaque formed from bacteria in mouth reacting with food especially sugar
Will produce acid that burns a hole through enamel
What 2 food nutrients needed for strong teeth
Calcium and vitamin D
What do we need carbohydrates in diet for
Energy
What is protein needed for
Growth and repair
What is fat needed for
Energy store
Insulation
What is fibre needed for
Prevent constipation
What food are rich in starch
Potatoes
Pasta
Rice
Bread
What foods are rich in sugar
Sweets
Fizzy drinks
Honey
What foods are rich in protein
Fish
Meat
Eggs
Milk
What foods contain fat
Oil
Butter
Sausages
What is the name given when food enters the mouth
Ingestion
What is digestion
Breaking down large insoluble molecules to small soluble molecules
What is found in the stomach and what is it’s job
Acid (hydrochloric acid) to kill bacteria
What is the wave like movement of material down the oesophagus called
Peristalsis
What happens in the small intestine
Food is broken down (digested) by enzymes and then passes into the blood
What 3 enzymes are used in digestion
Amylase, protease, lipase
What do amylase break down
Breaks down starch to sugars
What does protease break down
Protein to amino acids
What does lipase break down
fats to fatty acids and glycerol
What in the smallintestine helps make a large surface area for absorption of food into blood
Villi
What food group will end up in the large intestine
Fibre
What material gets absorbed into blood from large intestine
Water
What is the name for removal of waste from digestive system
Egestion
What are the front teeth called and their function
Incisors
To cut food
What are the linty teeth called and job
Canine
Used to tear food
What are the large teeth at back called
Premolars and molars - used to crush and grind food
What is used in chemical digestion of food
Enzymes
What is used in mechanical digestion of food
Teeth, tongue and stomach
What adaptations do small intestine have to allow absorption of food
Thin walled
Villi to increase surface area
Good blood supply
Balanced diet
Eating the right amount of each food group
Unbalanced diet
Not eating the right amount of each food group
