FOOD TECH - The AFI Flashcards
Levels of Operation and Mechanisation
Description and features and include example of:
Household
-Very basic and the quantity of an item produced is minimal
eg. Making a batch of lemon butter to sell at a local craft market.
-Equipment used is restricted to home appliances.
Levels of Operation and Mechanisation
Description and features and include example of:
Small business
Food is produced on a small scale.
eg. include boutique cake shops and gourmet butcher shops.
Equipment used is not usually industrial
Levels of Operation and Mechanisation
Description and features and include example of:
Large companies
A company may operate several stores or processing plants and the quantity of food produced or sold is on a large scale.
For example, Greens makes a range of packet cake mixes, which are produced on a large scale for later redistribution to retail outlets such as Coles and Woolworths.
Many of the processes used are mechanized and many tasks involved in the production process are automated and require less hands-on labor.
Levels of Operation and Mechanisation
Description and features and include example of:
Multinationals
A multinational food organization or company operates all over the world.
Use highly sophisticated technology and have a large product output or yield.
Research and Development
What is Research and Development (R&D) and its benefits?
Refers to the process used to:
-create new food products
-improve existing products
-And explore the market in which food organisations operate.
These have the ability to respond to changing markets and consumer demands, developing new technologies to assist in the growing and processing and manufacturing of food products.
Research and Development
What are two government organizations that assist with Research and Development
Commonwealth scientific and industrial research organization (CSIRO)
Research and development corporations (RDC)
Research and Development
Outline what does the Commonwealth scientific and industrial research organization (CSIRO)
-This government organisation carries out scientific research to benefit Australian food industry and the community, and to contribute to the achievement of national objectives.
-Research may include studying the make of crop and animals to the methods and food processing systems used to produce more safe and healthy sustainable food for Australians.
Example of their success include:
- CSIRO aim to reducing the incidence of chronic disease through improved diet through BARLEYmax that is (high in fibre and resistant to starch). Which is now used in a range of commercially available food products
- It is estimated to be worth approximately $305 million per year due to its potential for lowering rates of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer.
- Also benefits grain growers, through additional earnings from guaranteed prices for barley and diversification of farm business models.
Research and Development
What does Research and development corporations (RDC)
The RDC is a government organisation that have helped drive agricultural innovation since 1989. They allow Australian government to invest in research and development (R&D). This benefits industry and regional communities
Benefits include developing new products and services, improved processes and new ways to interact with customers. Innovations that result in greater profits and lower costs.
Quality Assurance
What is quality assurance
The process of ensuring that certain standards relating to the quality of the product are met at all stages of the production and manufacturing process.
Quality Assurance
