What is a famine characterized by?
A famine is characterized by wide spread deaths due to starvation and epidemics caused by forced use of contaminated water or decaying food and loss of body resistance due to weakening from starvation.
Who are most affected by famines?
Agricultural laborers, fishermen, transport workers and other casual laborers.
Who are food insecure?
Landless people, traditional artisans, providers of traditional services, casual laborers, petty self-employed workers and destitute people.
Who are prone to food insecurity?
SCs, STs, and lower castes of OBCs, and people affected by natural disasters.
Which states are the most insecure in India?
Parts of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, parts of MP and Maharashtra.
Which are the two types of hunger?
Hunger is not just an expression of poverty; it brings about poverty.
Chronic Hunger- A consequence of diets persistently inadequate in terms of quantity and/or quality.
Seasonal Hunger- Exists when a person is unable to get work for an entire year.
Describe the steps for food security in India.
1) India has avoided famine even during adverse weather conditions since the advent of the Green Revolution.
2) India has become self-sufficient in grains because a variety of crops are grown.
3) Introduction of a food-security system with two components PDS and Buffer Stock.
