Why does the UK import so much food?
Produced food can be expensive because of poor harvests and the price of animal feed
availability of cheaper food from abroad can be imported by supermarkets for low prices
the climate is unsuitable e.g cocoa, tea, banana

demand for greater choice like exotic foods.

higher levels of investment and use modern technology and chemicals
smaller farms might be combines to make a larger farm which increases yield.

Globalisation has increased demand for exotic produce in the UK - provides lots of jobs.
challanges of UK food provision
transporting food by air is very expensive = increased food miles and the cost of keeping produce fresh is high.

Profits increase and production increases
able to provide food for people to consume
increases yield due to pesticides and fertilisers which increase productivity

Pests are controlled naturally - lady birds to eat blackfly
