We change it in someway to make it useful to us

To make them edible so we can eat them
To preserve them so they last longer
To increase the nutrient value,such as adding vitamins or making food easier to digest

By peeling and chopping them and by cooking them

Fermenting. Fermenting is when you use bacteria and yeast to change a food

They can lose some of their nutrients

What happens when we combine something?
When we mix different foods together we combine them together to make new foods
What happens when cooking takes place?
When we heat food we cook it. Cooking certain food makes it more edible
What happens when Freezing food?
When we make food very cold we freeze it. Frozen food does not go rotten easily/quickly. Freezing is a way to preserve food
What happens when Pickling takes place?
Pickling is when we use vinegar or salt water to preserve food.
What happens when we Drying takes place?
When we let all the water in food evaporate,we call it Drying. Smoking meat is also a way of drying.Drying food also makes it last longer.
What is Salting?
Salting is when we cover food in salt and make it dey
How did the Nguni people preserve Maize?
They left it in a pit and made a fire to dry the soil and stop the maze from rotting.
How did the Nguni people prepare and cook maize?
Sometimes they soaked it in water to ferment and then masked and cooked a porridge
Then other times the crushed the maize with a grind stone which they cooked
