Food Processing Flashcards
What is a micro-organism?
It’s very tiny organisms found near or on food that lead to food being spoiled.
What is the cause of our food spoiling so quickly?
Very tiny organisms i.e. bacteria and fungi are found on or near food.
Give 3 reasons Why do we process food?
- Making food edible
- Making food last longer
- improving food’s nutrient value
What is Pasteurising?
It is a process*** used to ***slow down*** the ***spoiling of food*** by ***heating*** and ***cooling the food quickly.
What is perishable food?
It is fresh food products that will spoil quickly over time if not kept in the freezer.
What is it when we preserve something?
Processing food in such a way as preventing or slowing down the spoiling of the food.
What is fermentation?
When you add special bacteria to a food product to start the fermenting process that will improve the final food product’s flavour and texture
What does it mean to make the food edible?
- Preparing*** food i.e. ***boil*** potato or ***peel a potato
- Making food taste better*** or ***changing*** it so that it ***last longer i.e. Pasteurising
What do you understand about making food last longer?
- Perishable*** food needs to be ***preserved*** to make it l_ast longe_***r.
- Preserving*** food includes ***freezing***, ***pickling***, ***smoking***, ***dehydration***, ***canning,*** and ***packaging
