Vegetarian
Vegetarians DO NOT eat meat, poultry, fish or animal products such as animal gelatine.
Vegan
Vegans do not eat ANY animal products.
They do not eat meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, eggs and honey.
Organic
Organic foods are produced by not using ANY chemical pesticides, fungicides, synthetic drugs or GM modification.
Lifestyle choices
Choosing varied diets can sometimes be a LIFESTYLE choice and there is no scientific proof that it improves your health.
For example only eating ORGANIC produce.

With the addition of the UNION JACK flag that product has been farmed in the UK, quality for hygiene, safety, equipment, animal health, environmental health and responsible use of pesticides have been met.

Fair Trade
FAIR TRADE guarantees that lesser economically developed countries receive a fair price for their goods.
Workers benefit from investment in education, healthcare and farming.
Found on bananas, coffee and chocolate.
GM Foods
GENETICALLY MODIFIED foods have their DNA altered to INCREASE crop production.
Benefits : Need less water, disease and pest resistant, can have a higher protein content and withstand weather better.
Islam & ‘Halal’ meat
Halal is an Arabic word that means “permissible.” In terms of food, it means food that is permissible according to Islamic law.
The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe.
Plus also only using certain cuts of meat, such as none from the hind quarters.
Dietary requirements:
No Pork ‘only Halal meat’
Judaism & ‘Kosher’ meat
A kosher species must be slaughtered by a “Schochet,” a ritual slaughterer.
Since Jewish Law prohibits causing any pain to animals, the slaughtering has to be effected in such a way that unconsciousness is instantaneous and death occurs almost instantaneously.
Dietary requirements: No shellfish No Pork No dairy & meat in the same meal 'Only Kosher meat'
Sikhism
Dietary requirements:
No beef in their diet.
Quite often vegetarian
Hinduism
Dietary requirements:
No beef or beef products in their diet.
Ethical issues
People may avoid certain foods due to their religious, personal beliefs about the enivironment or worry about health risks.
Religion may restrict their consumption of meat.
Environment will restrict their choices of where the food comes from and how it is produced.
Health risks consumers will avoid foods associated with media coverage e.g. poultry during a bird flu outbreak.
The 6 R’s
Recycle - Packaging cardboard can aid reducing rubbish that ends up in land fill.
Refuse - Refuse to buy products that use excess packaging.
Repair - Repair equipment rather than replace it. In food manufacturing.
Rethink - Manufacturers plan and rethink the amount of food packaging they use
Reduce - Design minimal packaging that is used to package food.
Renewable - Replant resources, so that they can be replaced in a 50 year cycle.
Reduce Food Miles
- Buy local homegrown produce.
- Buy seasonal produce.
- Choose sources closest to the UK instead of international foods.
Deforestation
Palm oil used in products like Nutella and chocolate has been planted on areas that natural forest has been removed.
Many animals and plants are now extinct due to this.
