Food Chain
A sequence of organisms in which each member of the food chain feed on the member below
Food Web
The interconnection of food chains in an ecosystem, how one food chain connects to another.
Ecosystem
A community of both living and non-living organisms in which they interact.
Biotic
The living components of an ecosystem.
Abiotic
The non-living components of an ecosystem.
Producer
an organism that uses energy from the sun to make its own food.
* also know as an AUTOTROPH*
Consumer
An organism that obtains its food by eating another organism.
* also known as a HETEROTROPH*
PRIMARY CONSUMER: feeds directly on plants
SECONDARY CONSUMER: feeds on organisms that eat plants
TERTIARY CONSUMER: top consumer
Carnivore
Meat-eater
Herbivore
Plant-eater
Omnivore
Eats both plants and animals
Scavengers
Feed on the bodies of larger dead animals
Detrivores
Feed on the bodies of smaller dead animals and dead plant matter and animal dung.
Decomposers
Eat dead or decaying organic matter then release nutrients to be used by other organisms
