Food chains Flashcards
what is a food chain
a sequence of organisms which feed on a type of organisms from the proceeding food level
producer
the organism that can convert inorganic molecules such as CO2 and H2O into organic molecules such as glucose ( self feeder)
autotroph
also self feeding (same as producer)
photosynthetic autotroph
reduce CO2 to glucose using light energy
chemosynthetic autotroph
use energy released by inorganic chemical reactions to produce organic molecules
heterotrophs/ consumers
gain energy by ingesting material from other organisms
primary consumers
eats plant material
secondary consumer
eats the herbivore so is a carnivore
tertiary consumer
eats the secondary consumer
omnivore
consumers that can feed on both plants and animals
trophic level
the number of steps an organism is from the start of the chain
food web
a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains
